September 30, 2023: Strings & Stanzas at the Newark Museum of Art
Members of The Harlem Chamber Players joined the Newark Arts Festival in its celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop. THCP members joined members of the New Jersey Symphony in performances by Daniel Bernard Roumain and Terrance McKnight.

October 2, 2023: Composers Now/Cheswatyr Commissions at The Forum at Columbia University
Composers Now, founded and directed by the Kennedy Center honoree Tania León, and The Forum presented members of The Harlem Chamber Players in a world premiere performance of The Island Before Open Waters (2023) by the emerging composer Alyssa Regent. This was the second year of Composers Now’s collaborative commissioning, mentorship and professional development initiative, underwritten by the Cheswatyr Foundation. Alyssa was mentored by composer Bora Yoon.

October 28, 2023: St. Mary’s 200th Anniversary Celebration at The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine

December 2, 2023: Celebration of Light Joint Concert with Opus 118 at Broadway Presbyterian Church
Members of The Harlem Chamber Players — violinists Claire Chan, Nicole Wright, and Amadi Azikiwe, violist Aundrey Mitchell, cellist Wayne Smith, and double bassist Anthony Morris — joined the students of Opus 118 Harlem School of Music in a holiday concert. The Sing for Hope Youth Chorus also joined.
This concert featured works by Telemann’s Sinfonia, Ervin T. Rouse’s Orange Blossom Special, Pachelbel’s Canon in D, and Pierpon’s Jingle Bells performed by the Opus 118 Ensemble and joined by members of The Harlem Chamber Players. The Sing for Hope Youth Chorus performed United by Ignacio “Iggy” Rosado (with a new arrangement with string quartet with members of THCP joining) and See Amid the Winter’s Snow by John Goss (arr. Dan Forrest). Members of THCP performed Valerie Coleman’s Umoja, William Grant Still’s The Jovial One from Lyric Quartette, and Vivaldi’s Winter from The Four Seasons, featuring violinist Nicole Wright as soloist.

December 4, 2023: Educational Concerts at Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School
Members of The Harlem Chamber Players — violinists Amadi Azikiwe and Nicole Wright, violist Orlando Well, and cellist Kirsten Jermé — performed selections from Joseph Bologne’s String Quartet No. 5 in G Major, Nkeiru Okoye’s Three Movements for String Quartet, and Florence Price’s 5 Folksongs in Counterpoint for K-2nd grades and 3rd-5th grades.

December 8 & 15, 2023: Moynihan Music Series
The Sing for Hope organization presents members of The Harlem Chamber Players — flutist Adrienne Baker, oboist Mark Sophia, clarinetist Liz Player, French hornist Eric Davis, and bassoonist Amy Fraser — in performances of winter holiday music. The performances also included selections from Ibert’s Trois pièces brèves, Lina Mathon Blanchet’s Haitian Folk Tale, William Grant Still’s Miniatures, Jeff Scott’s Homage to Duke, Valerie Coleman’s Umoja, and Becky Steltzner’s Hambani Kakuhle Kwela.

December 12, 2023: Mizuho ERG Holiday Concert at Mizuho Americas
UNIDOS, in collaboration with the MAAP, M-WIN, PRIDE, and MADE ERGs, presented members of The Harlem Chamber Players — violinists Claire Chan and Ashley Horne, violist William Frampton, and cellist Wayne Smith — in a concert featuring music by Black and Latinx composers: Tania León’s Esencia, Gabriela Lena Frank’s Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout, and Paquito D’Rivera’s Wapango.

January 21, 2024: ”The Chevalier" at United Palace
The Harlem Chamber Players joined this musical play presented by Music Before 1800 and the United Palace of Cultural Arts. This play was written and directed by Bill Barclay and featured violinist Brendon Elliott, an orchestra comprised of members of The Harlem Chamber Players, and actors from Concert Theatre Works.

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture presented The Harlem Chamber Players’ 16th Annual Black History Month Celebration. This concert featured three phenomenal Black women and members of The Harlem Chamber Players. The featured guest artist was Nathalie Joachim who performed her latest work, Ki moun ou ye. The multi-disciplinary performing artist Helga Davis hosted this event.

March 9 & 10, 2024: Arctic Explorations at Theatre at St. Jean
Presented by the New Amsterdam Singers, this one-act folk opera by composer Michael Dellaira, based on the best-selling 1856 book of the same name by American explorer Elisha Kent Kane, touched on themes as varied as exploration, discovery, spirituality, and our relationship to the natural world. This world premiere, a co-production with the Cell Theatre and directed by Kira Simring, included members of The Harlem Chamber Players and Nuka Alice, an Inuit drum dancer and collaborator in the creation of the work.

March 21, 2024: Educational Programs at the Brooklyn New School
Members of The Harlem Chamber Players—violinists Amadi Azikiwe and Nicole Wright, violist Tia Allen, and cellist Kirsten Jermé—presented educational programs for the students of the Brooklyn New School. The quartet introduced works by Black composers such as Florence Price, William Grant Still, Nkeiru Okoye, Valerie Coleman, and Joseph Bologne (a.k.a. the Chevalier de Saint-Georges).

April 6, 2024: The Uptown Downbeat Youth Showcase at St. Paul & St. Andrew
This showcase featured students from Harlem and beyond with members of The Harlem Chamber Players—violinists Amadi Azikiwe and Orlando Wells, violist Tia Allen, and cellist Kirsten Jermé. Over 120 students from Opus 118 Harlem School of Music, The Harmony Program, Harlem School of the Arts, Keys 2 Success (Newark, NJ), and Sing for Hope Chorus participated and performed music by John Rosamond Johnson, William Grant Still, Astor Piazzolla, Antonio Vivaldi, Shinichi Suzuki, Gustav Holst, Peter Warlock, Georg Philipp Telemann, Ervin T. April 20, 2024: Double Feature: Byeong Woo Lee + Bong Joon Ho "Mother" Live at The Town Hall
The Town Hall presented the New York debut of Byeong Woo Lee in a specially curated musical "double feature"—a two-part concert of Lee's music with a full-length live score presentation of Bong Joon Ho's masterpiece Mother (2009) preceded by a concert of guitar performance led by the aforementioned Lee. For both presentations, Lee will be joined by an orchestra assembled from members of The Harlem Chamber Players. Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Tania León will conduct Lee and The Harlem Chamber Players in the live score of Mother (2009).

April 29, 2024: Joint Concert with Keys 2 Success at Rock Christian Fellowship in Newark, NJ
Members of The Harlem Chamber Players — flutist Adrienne Baker, oboist Mark Sophia, clarinetist Liz Player, bassoonist Amy Fraser, and French hornist Matthew Jaimes — joined the keyboard students of Keys 2 Success in an interactive program, featured selections from music by William Grant Still, which culminated in a joint performance with the students.

May 5, 2024: Yearning to Breathe Free at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church
The Harlem Chamber Players will join the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble to perform selections from the poetry of Emma Lazarus and the music of Dietrich Buxtehude are dual inspirations for Caroline Shaw’s deeply moving cantata, To the Hands, which explores the plight of refugees from around the world and contemplates our “role and responsibility in these global and local crises.” Shaw’s work is paired with Buxtehude’s Ad Manus, from his Membra Jesu Nostri (on which Shaw based her composition), as well as with other pieces related to this theme, including Saunder Choi’s The New Colossus and the final anthem from 1001 Voices: A Symphony for a New America by Frank London and Judith Sloan. This performance featured the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble with violinists Ashley Horne and Josh Henderson; violist Amadi Azikiwe; cellist Leo Grinhauz; and bassist Anthony Morris.

Harlem Stage presented The Harlem Chamber Players and the Talea Ensemble in this tribute concert. Considered one of the most controversial and progressive composers of the 1970s and ’80s, Julius Eastman was a strong, vocal African-American queer artist whose music was nearly lost and his genius nearly forgotten forever.
Featuring flautist Coreisa Lee, clarinetists David Sapadin and Rana Moore, pianist Imri Talgam, synthesizer/music director Christopher McIntyre, vibraphonist Matthew Gold, violinists Ashley Horne and Claire Chan, violist Matthew Beaugé, and electric bassist Greg Chudzik.

This episode featured the legendary dancer and founder of Dance Theatre of Harlem. The Harlem Chamber Players joined forces with  Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Harlem School of the Arts for this special homage to Arthur Mitchell.
The tribute began with introductory remarks by the Artistic Director of Dance Theatre of Harlem, Virginia Johnson, and Pulitzer-Prize winning composer-conductor Tania León. Also included were Harlem School of the Arts students and a special performance by members of Dance Theatre of Harlem with an orchestra comprising members of The Harlem Chamber Players conducted by Tania León.

The choir was comprised of Chorale Le Chateau members. The orchestra was comprised of members of The Harlem Chamber Players. This event had over 150 performers, including a 75-member choir with a 60-piece orchestra, and 28 dancers (alumni, teen, and junior ensembles) from the Harlem School of the Arts with choreography by Leyland Simmons.
This concert was presented in association with the Manhattan School of Music and the Harlem School of the Arts.

Bill Barclay A Concert Theatre Work about Joseph Bologne
This musical play honored the life of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges — a prolific 18th-century composer, virtuoso violinist, the finest fencer in Europe, general of Europe’s first Black regiment, and a crusader for equality. 
Members of The Harlem Chamber Players were joined by four actors and a guest violinist exploring Bologne’s music, friendships with Mozart and Marie Antoinette, and his unknown contribution to the abolishment of slavery. 
Featuring violinist Brendon Elliott, actors R.J. Foster (Joseph Bologne), Sarah Baskin (Marie Antoinette), David Joseph (Mozart), Bill Barclay (Pierre Choderlos de Laclos) with string orchestra comprising members of The Harlem Chamber Players.

It is a lament, a love song, a prayer, and a plea to America in a time of deep uncertainty, in remembrance of all that this nation has been, and all that it can be. Join us for a virtual film presentation conceived and directed by harpist Dr. Ashley Jackson. Experience excerpts from Harriet Jacobs's memoir Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, as Dr. Jackson also examines her own family history to explore themes of migration and black womanhood. This panel featured discussions among the leading figures of color in the worlds of orchestral music, music education, music administration, chamber music, and musical theater. The goal of this panel was to expose students and the broader audience to the many different career paths, fields of work, and opportunities in the profession of music. Panelists included Monica Ellis of Imani Winds, Gary Padmore of the New York Philharmonic, Titus Underwood of the Nashville Symphony, Weston Sprott of The Juilliard School, Liz Player of The Harlem Chamber Players, and music director and composer Andrew Sotomayor and was moderated by our own director of educational programming, Hassan Anderson. This event was free and recommended for students ages 9 to 21 interested in pursuing a music career.
